Yes or No?
In this chapter we examine claims that one verse of Scripture affirms what another denies. If one verse answers “yes” to a question, while another verse answers “no” to the same question at the same time and sense, then this would constitute a genuine contradiction. Such an instance cannot be a mere compatible difference, because yes and no are incompatible. A contradiction is defined as one premise denying what another affirms. This category of alleged contradiction is therefore the most serious — if the claims turn out to be legitimate.
297. Is it wrong to commit adultery? Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18; and Hebrews 13:4 say that adultery is wrong, but Numbers 31:18 and Hosea 1:2, 3:1 teach that it is okay.
Failure to read the text. The Bible unilaterally denounces adultery as sin. Neither Numbers 31:18, nor Hosea 1:2, 3:1 say otherwise. Numbers 31:18 refers to virgin women that the Hebrew men would be allowed to marry — there is not the slightest hint of adultery. Nor does God endorse or approve of adultery anywhere in Hosea. Rather, God commands Hosea to marry an (at that time) unmarried woman (Gomer) who was or would become an adulteress. It’s an unusual command, but it does not require Hosea to commit adultery, nor does it endorse the past or future adultery of Gomer. Even when Gomer is unfaithful to Hosea, God commands Hosea to love her and take her back (Hosea 3:1). Where is the supposed contradiction?
298. Did Jesus tell His disciples everything? John 15:15 says yes, but John 16:12 says no.
Failure to read the text carefully. In John 15:15, Jesus tells His disciples that He had made known to them all things He had heard [i.e., at that time] from His Father — that is, all those things pertaining to the Gospel and Christ’s mission of redemption. The text does not say that He told them “everything” — as in every fact that God knows — which would be infinite. Nor does John 16:12 state this. In John 16:12, Jesus indicates that He has more to say to them, not with respect to the main doctrines of the Gospel which He had already disclosed to them (John 15:15), but on other issues. Neither John 15:15, nor John 16:12 indicate that Jesus told His disciples everything about everything.
299. Should you answer a fool according to his folly? Proverbs 26:5 says yes, but Proverbs 26:4 says no.
Failure to distinguish different senses. The sense is different between these two verses. Proverbs 26:4 indicates that a fool should not be answered according to his folly in the sense of becoming like him. That is, a person should not embrace the fool’s standards. However, Proverbs 26:5 indicates that a fool should be answered in such a way to expose his folly, so that he cannot be wise in his own estimation. That is, the standards of the fool should be exposed as foolish.
